2GB ICOO V616 DAP is definitely worth $14

Not thrilled with the value proposition presented in Apple's newest iPod Shuffle? Why, have a look at this! The 2GB ICOO V616 DAP ain't much, but it does sport an OLED display and probably plays nice with a whole gaggle of file formats. Really, the bottom line is that this thing is just 99 yuan (around $14), so there's no doubt it's worth the asking price. Doubly so if it comes bundled with those Band Of Brothers dog tags.

Ballmer says tide has turned on Apple, "paying $500 more to get a logo on it" won't work in this economy

Hot off word that Apple's Mac and iPod sales for February took a 16 percent hit compared to last year, Steve Ballmer says the "tide has really turned" after recent Apple market share gains: "Apple gained about one point, but now I think the tide has really turned back the other direction. The economy is helpful. Paying an extra $500 for a computer in this environment -- same piece of hardware -- paying $500 more to get a logo on it? I think that's a more challenging proposition for the average person than it used to be." Of course, PC sales have been hit as well, but the numbers do point to Apple's market share slipping of late. Of course, he's not exactly complementing the masses when he says that people were paying $500 more a fruit logo. Maybe, just maybe design and software had something to do with it? Just something to think about, while you roll around in piles of cash and a dominant market share, Steve.

mophie launches $99.95 Juice Pack for iPod touch 2G

Dropping a Benjamin on mophie's iPhone 3G Juice Pack didn't seem too painful considering the alternative of possessing a brick after about four hours of 3G usage, but we get the feeling iPod touch 2G users are going to have a slightly more difficult time rationalizing this one. Launched today for $99.95, the Juice Pack for iPod touch 2G was specially crafted to hold Apple's latest touch, and it promises to practically double the amount of jam time by including a rechargeable Li-ion. The case / battery extender also sports a pass-through USB cable design, and the four light LED status indicator gives you visual cues on battery level. Specifically, mophie claims that this device adds up to 42 hours of audio playback or 7 hours of video playback, and if you've already decided to become an early adopter, you can head on over and get one shipped out today. Full release is past the break.

Mobile OS shootout: iPhone OS 3.0 enters the fray

As soon as Apple rolled out its preview of iPhone OS 3.0, the comparisons to existing (and forthcoming) mobile OSs started flying. While the major update isn't exactly a done deal, it's pretty far along, and we've been able to glean quite a bit from our time with the developer beta we've been checking out. iPhone OS, Android, webOS, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, S60; if you're in the market for a new smartphone, your choices have been getting exponentially more complicated lately, and 3.0 won't make the selection any easier. Luckily for you, Engadget is here to make sense of a frightening and uncertain landscape. Read on for an in-depth look at the similarities -- and differences -- between modern mobile operating systems.

Sony hides audio system within stylish RHT-G HDTV stands

If Onei Solutions' speaker-infused TV stand was a bit too extravagant for your den, why not consider Sony's completely classy alternatives? The new RHT-G series follows up on last year's model by including three new HDTV stands that include multi-channel audio systems. The RHT-G950 is designed to hold sets from 40- to 46-inches, while the RHT-G1550 handles big screens in the 46- to 55-inch range and the RHT-G550 holds those 32- to 40-inch models. The G950 and G1550 each host a 5.1-channel array of speakers with 470- and 550-watts of power, respectively; the smaller G550 does 3.1 with 330-watts. There's also a dozen selectable sound modes, a trio of HDMI inputs, BRAVIA Sync support and a Digital Media Port for connecting one's Walkman, PC, phone or iPod. There's no mention of pricing just yet, but these should hit shelves in the May to July time frame.

Palm's subscription accounting webOS plans revealed, CPAs rejoice

Palm fans hoping webOS gets the same kind of upgrade attention Apple's been lavishing on the iPhone take note: a deck of presentation slides has revealed plans to recognize revenue from webOS products over two years using subscription accounting, so Palm can "periodically provide new software features free or charge" to customers of its "webOS products, including the recently announced Pre." If that didn't make any sense to the non-suits out there, just remember this bit of number magic is why Apple treats iPhone and iPod touch users differently when it comes to updates -- the iPod doesn't get 3.0 for free because Apple doesn't handle the math this way. At any rate, number crunchers and MAC students can head on down to the read link for lots more invigorating stuff.

The Pwn2Own trifecta: Safari, IE 8, and Firefox exploited on day 1

That didn't take long. One day into the Pwn2Own hacking competition at CanSecWest and already Apple, Microsoft, and Mozilla have been sent packing to their respective labs to work on security issues in their browsers. In a repeat performance, Charlie Miller pocketed a $5,000 cash prize and a fully-patched MacBook by splitting it wide, and gaining full control of the device after a user clicked on his malicious link. Another white-hatter by the name Nils (pictured) toppled Internet Explorer 8 running on a Windows 7 laptop -- again, the five grand and compromised VAIO P laptop are now his to keep as compensation for turning over the malicious code. So much for "protection that no other browser can match," eh Mr. Ballmer? Nils then demonstrated a second Safari exploit before hacking Firefox later in the afternoon netting him a cool $15k by the close of day one. Only Google's Chrome was left unscathed -- Opera isn't part of the contest. This year's contest will also offer a $10,000 prize for every vulnerability successfully exploited in Windows Mobile, Android, Symbian, and the iPhone and BlackBerry OSes. In other words: this contest that runs through Friday isn't over by any stretch.

SwitchEasy's ThumbTacks are the cutest iPod mics you ever did see

SwitchEasy's ThumbTacks are far from being the first third-party microphones designed to function nicely with Apple's iPod nano 4G and second-generation iPod touch, but we'll be darned if they aren't the cutest. Clearly designed to mimic the iconic thumb tack, these itty-bitty microphones function with all third-party voice applications and can be selected in black, white or red. Not too shabby for $15.99 shipped, wouldn't you say?

USB tethering, Publish Video and Find my iPhone found in OS 3.0

Apple touted quite a few new iPhone features at yesterday's OS 3.0 event, but now that the beta build is trickling out, there's been a bevy of unearthed discoveries to further pique our interests. First up, the gang at Boy Genius Report found an option to enable the "Find My iPhone" service in the MobileMe settings. Unfortunately, that's all we've got, but we wouldn't put it past Cupertino to build some me.com-linked location tracker that'd be the envy of Orwell himself -- hey, that'd be pretty useful if you accidentally left the mobile in a taxi. Also in the MobileMe section, it now says Publish Video when you go to publish an image. It's an odd typo, to be sure, and while video recording has been near the top of our wishlist for some time, we're not about to get our hopes up. Finally, Mac Rumors is reporting that a hacker has dug up and successfully activated the USB tethering capabilities. Apple's Scott Forstall had mentioned the devs were building it in, but were still in talks with the carriers. As to whether any or all of these functions will actually end up in the final OS 3.0 build, your guess is a good as ours. For now, check out more pics of the MobileMe additions after the break.

[Thanks everyone who sent this in!]

AT&T to offer unsubsidized iPhone 3G with no commitment required?

For existing AT&T subscribers looking to get a new handset for a few months before they make that inevitable Pre / iPhone 3.0 / Gizmondo decision this summer -- or folks who just despise contracts in general -- it looks like AT&T will be offering unsubsidized iPhone 3Gs at last. According to some training slides obtained by The Boy Genius, the "no-commit" price will only be available to existing customers, and will run them $599 for the 8GB model and $699 for the 16GB. Sounds like somebody's looking to flush a bit of stock, or perhaps they've finally decided to almost treat the phone like pretty much every single other device on the market -- wild times we're living in, folks. The no-commit option should be available as of March 26th.

Rogers begins selling white Nokia E71, Americans consider relocating

You Yanks may bang on the Canucks for having to deal with those ridiculous three-year contracts, but every so often, something goes down in the Canadian mobile space that flat-out silences everyone beneath the border. Take this, for instance -- Nokia's white E71, which can only be scored over in Europe and now in Canada with support for native 3G bands, is finally on sale at Rogers Wireless. Oh sure, the only difference between this E71 and the black E71 is the colors involved, but we all know just how important that becomes when exclusivity is mixed in. The pain? $99.99 on a lifetime, er, three-year contract. Sorry, we had too.

RAmos T10 in the wild, hanging out with iPhones, PSPs and blood diamonds

We knew the upcoming T10 from RAmos was quite a lot of hotness, with that 4.3-inch 800 x 480 screen in particular winning it a sizable portion of our hearts, but now the player is out and about getting glamour shots with its sexy friends. The T10 seems to acquit itself quite well on the design front up against folks like the iPhone 3G and the PSP, but we'll have to wait and see if that generic interface will make this PMP worth having.

iPhone OS 3.0 hands-on!

We're not saying how, but we got hooked up with the beta of iPhone OS 3.0. Overall, things feel about the same until you flick left that extra time and hit the Spotlight screen, which works just as advertised. It's definitely a beta, though: it's laggy all around and some things don't work, like taking a photo directly in the MMS app. We took some quick snaps, check 'em out below and let us know what you want to see in the video!

Update:
Added a few snaps of the landscape keyboard in Messages and Mail, anything else?

Stanton's T.55 and T.92 USB turntables take vinyl to MP3 sans fuss

We've already seen a number of mainstays in the turntable game crank out decks that easily archive vinyl records to MP3, and now we've got a new pair from Stanton making that same claim. The T.92 and T.55 USB turntables each feature USB and S/PDIF outputs and come bundled with Cakewalk Pyro Audio Creator and Audacity software. On the hardware front, you'll find an S-Shaped tone arm for lower distortion and reduced record wear along with a built-in DSP with key lock for controlling tempo without affecting pitch. As for differences, the T.55 is a belt-drive turntable that features a straight tone arm, while the T.92 touts a high-torque direct drive motor. Check 'em both right now at popular music retailers across the globe for $299 (T.92) and $199 (T.55). Full release is after the break.

2G iPod touch to have Bluetooth capability unlocked by iPhone OS 3.0

Looks like that Bluetooth chip in the iPod touch 2G we've always thought was for Nike+ suddenly got a lot more useful: Apple's Greg Joswiak said that Bluetooth can be "unlocked" on the device during the iPhone OS 3.0 Q&A session. That's two years of rumors put to rest, right there, and a solid move, seeing as three of the major 3.0 features are A2DP, wireless accessory control and peer-to-peer connections over Bluetooth. Any touch owners feeling more inclined to drop the $9.95 now?

Apple previews iPhone OS 3.0, frees developers to push, map and talk to hardware

As promised, Apple just debuted its upcoming iPhone OS 3.0, and we'll be fleshing out all the details in the forthcoming minutes. Improvements include:

App and developer functionality (more here)
  • Peer-to-peer connectivity over Bluetooth for gaming and other info-swapping.
  • Paid apps will have the potential to be subscription fee-based, and can include optional paid content that can be bought from right inside the app.
  • Developers can now build apps that call out to Google Maps, and can also finally bring Apple-blessed turn-by-turn to the phone.
  • Devs can also connect with hardware accessories in their apps now.
  • Long-promised push functionality will at last be included, but apps won't run in the background.
  • Developers can add streaming video and audio to their apps, along with in-game voice use.

Apple previews new SDK, App Store functionality

Apple has announced that it has added over 1,000 new API functions to the iPhone SDK in version 3.0 -- peer-to-peer connectivity and Bonjour support, among other goodies -- in addition to a subscription sales model and in-app purchases (great for optional content like game levels and city guides, we'd imagine). Devs will also be able to interface hardware accessories and Google Maps directly to their applications, which should be a big win for location-based stuff. What's more, the long, long overdue push notification functionality will finally be ready to roll, though it seems like there isn't much (if any) change from what was supposed to launch last year. App authors still have a lot more to read up on, though, because they've also added access to the device's iPod library, streaming media calls, and in-game voice -- another huge step toward making the iPhone a world-class gaming platform. One thing Apple's notable holding the line on is background apps; they're saying the same thing about battery life issues that they've said before, but at least we'll still be getting some push out of the deal. We're also going to be seeing official text selection support -- don't see a lot of that on an iPhone these days, now do you?

Dell Adamo to arrive tomorrow: $1,999

Not a ton of details to work with here, but Dell's confirmed to the hometown Austin American Statesman that the 13-inch Adamo we saw at CES will indeed launch tomorrow and be priced at $1,999. As expected, the machine will be just the first in an entire line of high-end Adamo-branded machines, but we don't know if Dell has anything else in store right away -- hopefully we'll find out more soon, as the 13-inch version is due out in 24 countries including the states on March 26th. Ballsy move launching a premium line in the shadow of Apple's iPhone 3.0 event, but you know we'll bring you all the details as soon as we have 'em.

Update:
Well, that was fast -- the Adamo is apparently already floating around SXSW in Austin. No specs yet, but that's a picture of the box up there. Yeah, it's hot. Check out a bunch more pics by Brian Solis here.

[Thanks, Billy]

Poll: What do you want most from iPhone 3.0 besides copy and paste?

We've been hearing even more chatter today about copy and paste coming to iPhone 3.0 at tomorrow's event, and that got us thinking: man, is that ever weak. Seriously, if Apple is really trying to "get up to speed with the Pre" as claimed by Kevin Rose, it'd better bring some actual firepower to the table, not basic functionality we should be taking for granted. So, we put it to you: what's the one thing you most want from iPhone 3.0 besides copy and paste? Be honest!

Apple confirms presence of proprietary chip in shuffle headphones, licensing fee

A flurry of news broke out over yesterday regarding the proprietary headphones required by Apple's new iPod shuffle, and now that Monday's here and everyone's back in the office, some things are starting to get cleared up. For starters, both Macworld and Boing Boing Gadgets have confirmed with Apple and various third-party vendors that the new shuffle headphones do in fact contain a proprietary control chip, and that would-be headphone makers have to pay to license it from Apple as part of the Made for iPod program. Yep, that's bad news, confirmed -- but all hope for inexpensive accessories isn't lost, as we're told that the chip isn't encrypted or otherwise locked down in any way, so it's easily cloned by companies who'd rather not pay. Still, eschewing Made for iPod certification pretty much dooms a product to niche status in the Apple universe, so it's a pretty weak consolation -- when this all shakes out, we're guessing only Apple-taxed headphones will be widely available for the shuffle, and that makes the value proposition somewhat hard to see. Just say no, people.

Engadget's recession antidote: win a Mint 130 Digital Music Station!

Engadget's recession antidote: Mint 130 Digital Music Station
This whole global economic crisis, and its resulting massive loss of jobs got us thinking. We here at Engadget didn't want to stand helplessly by, announcing every new round of misery without giving anything back -- so we decided to take the opportunity to spread a little positivity. We'll be handing out a new gadget every day (except for weekends) to lucky readers until we run out of stuff / companies stop sending things. Today we've got a 30 watt Mint 130 Digital Music Station on offer, able to fill your office with tunes from an iPod, PC, or Mac. Read the rules below (no skimming -- we're omniscient and can tell when you've skimmed) and get commenting!

Special thanks to Digital Signature for providing the gear!

The rules:
  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do, but if you want to share your proposal for "fixing" the world economy, that'd be sweet too.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you'll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you'll be fine.
  • Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don't make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winner will be chosen randomly. The winner will receive one Mint 130 Digitial Music Station. Approximate value is $119.
  • If you are chosen, you will be notified by email. Winners must respond within three days of the end of the contest. If you do not respond within that period, another winner will be chosen.
  • Entries can be submitted until Monday, March 16th, 11:59PM ET. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.
